My thoughts on the Hey Arnold! Spinoff
Apr. 23rd, 2023 12:57 pmJust earlier I found an interesting mini documentary about the Hey Arnold! spinoff on youtube. I would have loved it if Mtv/ Nick at Nite picked up the Patakis pitch back in the 2000s, but they thought the lead character would be too similar to Daria? As much as I loved Daria series, I do not think a teenage Helga Pataki would be anything like her. Helga literally grew up in a working-class neighborhood (her parents tends to go up and down financially but the majority of her peers are not rich) and Daria is from an upper middle family living in the suburbs...so the vibes would be very different. But I guess that was their way of saying, "Yeah, this show will not sell".
Like, imagine how many cool lo-fi hip hop edits we would be having now if they picked up The Patakis?!?! American teenage series with the Charlie Brown vibes are still rare. It would be a nice change from Celebrity Deathmatch, Robot Chicken and half of the stuff from Liquid TV. I love the idea of Arnold and Helga being genuine soulmates.
