a picture of the sun in a toxic air, in Los Angeles rolls of tape and scissors

About a few days ago, we had a wind storm in our area. It's quite windy that it actually took some massive trucks out as if you were to tip a cow to its sides. A friend of ours mentioned that we haven't been getting any rain at all, we were expecting our wet season. With the chaparrals region being under drought combined with the intensity of the wind pretty much equals fire.  Before the wind storm happened, Bern and I feared this would happen and it did. We saw what happened in Nor Cal; similar situation with the wind in Los Angeles County.  Hearing about fires is not unique to us, we have friends who lost their homes to them. However, we're still pretty shocked because it's winter.

Everyone in our local circle are from middle class, working class families, different ethnicities and racial backgrounds. These are people who work in service jobs or trade-related work. Back then around most of the 20th century to the 80s, a sizable suburban homes were affordable for working class families to purchase. People have built communities in towns where they felt belong and accepted. There are BIPOC communities. They have been living there for generations. Until after the 90s, the value of their homes increased at a high value. This is a common thing that tends to happen at any populated region with high economy.

My family called/ texted us to check on us. While the air quality was bad (the AQI is better today, but the air still smells bad), fortunately, the evacuation zones didn't catch to our district. Bern and I are currently safe. On the watch duty app, it looks as if one of the fires are going in an opposite direction? Not great for those who are on the East of the fire! I basically just have to make sure to keep our air filter on. I lost some sleep and spent one whole night sealing up our windows & door. Some of the smokey air did seeped in a bit. I added a bit of humidity to clean our indoor air. As for today, I managed to get some sleep, especially after the 'accidental' heart-racing phone alerts.

My heart breaks for those from Pasadena & Altadena. This person described a bit of Altadena's history quite beautifully. Some of my favorite go-to spots are located there! If you follow my blog long enough, you probably read that I watch a lot of Huell Howser tv and somewhat of a local history nerd when it comes stories from the 20th century. As someone who loves everything involving rabbits, I was disheartened when I heard the Bunny Museum caught fire.

I had to put my workout routines to a halt, but I'm going to get back to doing my indoor workout today! Otherwise, I'll feel crummy and end up with a bad indigestion. Apparently someone was jogging in a neighborhood through a smokey air and my reactions were ''. Honestly, it's okay to skip fitness routine for a day or two. Breathing in the toxic air with no mask is quite awful. Perhaps work out indoors instead?!

After that, I'll do a bit of house organization. I know I have some practical clothes that no longer fits, I'm looking forward to donate them. There's a reason why I don't ever drop them off at most thrift places. I rather just give them away to those who wants them. I'm going to have to do some resources-hunting. So far, I found this list, thanks to my neighbors.

It's Songkran week! Happy New Year to anyone who celebrates/partakes in Buddhist holidays. So far, it's been a rainy weekend-- I guess that's perfect for a water festival celebration, after all, having rain feels purifying. I sent my parents a text wishing them well since there's not a whole lot I can do to celebrate this weekend, especially with the rain and the temperature being 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Bern and I thought about getting some grubs at Wat Thai in North Hollywood, but I think would rather go on a different weekend.

rainy day

I'm not upset that my weekend has been cold and wet. We do need rain and it provides deep greens to our scenery. I know there will be plenty of sunny days and mild temperature later this week. I love scenic drives on rainy days.

Bern and I ended up doing errands-- mostly groceries. To celebrate, I plan on making some of my childhood favorites for this week-- I'll do my best to update!

Warning: mentions of implied abuse & smoking. I do not advocate damaging the lungs.

Before I start of sharing my picture dump from the past couple of weeks, I like to mindfully wish my belated grandfather & my father a Happy Father's Day. While they weren't child development's textbook definition of perfect parents, I was never physically neglected by them.  I'm not going to get into what they could have done better, but at least I know what not to repeat if Bern and I do end up raising a child in the future.

So what were the things he did right? My father, who often worked overtime, was great about penciling in most weekends with my brother and I growing up. He valued going outdoors and made sure we were active. Our weekends were always filled with local parks, beach trips, & kid-friendly hiking places at state parks.  Also, he was considered the cool uncle/ brother-in-law when I was a toddler, so I had my young aunt, uncles, and cousins who would often tag along with us. Sometimes, he would switch it up and do scenic night drives on hills to catch city lights or he would take us all to some interesting arcades. I used to address my dad as Uncle Johnny* as a toddler because my cousins were around a lot.

I remember a handful of McDonald's drive thru trips and Chuck E. Cheese hangouts on weekdays, but I then later learn as an adult that was a way for my dad to blow off steam from my uncle (his narcissistic* older brother)  while my mother worked night shifts. I believe he didn't want my brother and I to see our uncle's outbursts. We became homeless for a bit because of him... my father  had to protect my brother and I (that's how we both ended up living with our maternal grandparents).  Unfortunately, he couldn't protect our cousins & his sister-in-law.

My maternal grandpa used to make  passive aggressive comments about my dad's siblings and I thought my grandpa was being mean in that regards, but now I've just realized why he did them. I guess as a child, you don't realize how ill some adults were and the ones who cared for you weren't too open about articulating it.

My gramps wasn't the most social person, he was just a quiet man who loved his coffee mornings. He was also a heavy smoker, he loved his pipe and his 555 cigs. However, him being a quiet person and heavy smoker doesn't negate the fact that he's one of the most sweetest person around...before my grandma's dementia, she talked about how she misses him a lot. I always loved the contraptions and playgrounds he built for my brother and I. When he saw how I was confident with my balance, he was the first person who taught me how to ride a bike! He was always there to help my grandma with food preparations. Like a lot of people in my family, he's quite green thumbed. It's nice to know that his garden pieces are still around.

Once again, cheers to the men in my life who did their best.

*Note: Johnny isn't really his name since I don't need to have my parents' name out there.
Also, my family and I are speculating that our uncle was a narcissist, he was never properly diagnosed.

And now, my Vitamin D- walk pics with Bern:

la hills la hills

la hills la hills

I love doing hilly walks, I've been doing mental scavenger hunts with different architectural buildings: storybook, 20s buildings and Mid Century modern homes. If you haven't heard of Paul Revere Williams, check out his stuff! He's one of the notable architects who've designed and influenced a lot of Mid Century styles in Los Angeles.

 blueberry pancakes chakway and congee

And because I was advised not to have any hard or crunchy foods after my wisdom tooth extraction, I've made blueberry pancakes for one day and congee with youtiao (I know it looks a bit lumpy, but I still liked it) for one other day. I've also made a delicious eggplant stir fry, but I don't really want to share my night time photography right now. XD
